2 firemen hurt after burning British-era building collapses

Mumbai: Two firemen suffered minor injuries after a heritage building dating back to the British-era near the Chatrapati Shivaji Terminus caught fire and subsequently collapsed this morning.According to the police and fire brigade, the five-storeyed Kothari building, also known as the Light of Asia building after an iconic restaurant on the ground floor, caught fire at around 4.30 this morning.”We rushed in 16 fire tenders to ensure that the fire did not spread to neighbouring buildings,” a spokesman for the fire brigade said.Fire officials said the heat of the blaze was so intense that part of the building collapsed on the fire engines below damaging them severely. Fire brigade personnel in the vehicles jumped out in the nick of time though two firemen suffered burn injuries and were rushed to hospital.Police and fire officials feel the fire may have been caused by a short-circuit, following the outbreak of the monsoons.Initial reports from the fire and police say no one was trapped in the building. The Mumbai civic body had declared the structure dangerous some time ago and evicted all occupants as a precautionary measure.Meanwhile, activists warned on social media that heritage buildings in the city were being systematically left to decay so that swanky new commercial structures are erected in their place.
