Action taken on majority of complaints: Gill panel

Action has been taken on 272 of the 346 complaints allowed so far by the Justice Mehtab Singh Gill (retd) Commission, which is investigating false cases registered during the 10-year SAD-BJP rule.

This was stated here by Justice Gill after submitting the 10th interim report to Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh on Tuesday evening. 

Gill said FIRs had been filed in the courts in 162 cases, while compliance of orders had been reported in 38. In another 33 cases, proceedings had been initiated under Section 182 of the IPC, and action had been taken against erring police officials in 10 cases. Compensation had so far been awarded in 29 cases, as per feedback received from the nodal officers.

The Chief Minister has issued strict directives to the police and other departments concerned to move expeditiously to take action as suggested by the Commission.

An official spokesperson said of the 4,451 complaints received, as on August 30, the Commission had disposed of 1,768. Of these, 1,413 had been dismissed.

Bathinda district had reported 47 cases of action taken by the police for cancellation of FIRs, followed by 17 (Moga district), 16 (Amritsar), 13 (Ludhiana), 12 (Tarn Taran) and 11 each from Faridkot and Ferozepur, according to data received from various districts. Ludhiana had the maximum number of cases (four) of action taken against erring police officials, while Amritsar, Bathinda, Faridkot, Ferozepur, Fazilka and Mansa had one such case each.
