Akalis protest false cases
Chamkaur Sahib, July 9
Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) workers today staged a dharna near the nagar panchayat office alleging that local MLA and Punjab Technical Education Minister Charanjit Singh Channi was shielding the mining mafia and implicating the SAD workers in false cases. They even tried to gherao Channi, who had come here to attend a meeting of the nagar panchayat.
The SAD leader and incharge of the Chamkaur Sahib Assembly constituency, Harmohan Singh Sandhu, who led the protest, claimed that a few days ago the SAD workers had handed over one JCB machine and two tippers which were being used in illegal digging of sand from the land of a Congress leader in the area to the police. He alleged that the machine and tippers were released by the police as these were related to a local Congress leader. On the other hand, a false case of molestation was registered against SAD councillor Kirpal Singh Gill at the behest of Channi recently, he alleged.
Former Chamkaur Sahib nagar panchayat president and councillor Amandeep Singh Mangat said they would not allow illegal mining in the area.
However, Channi said these allegations were out of frustration among SAD leaders due to their repeated defeat in the constituency. “I am against illegal mining and levelling of fields by farmers is not a crime,” he added.
