Andrew Scheer holds dual Canadian-American citizenship
Conservative leader and Federal election candidate Andrew Scheer holds dual Canadian-US citizenship as revealed today. A spokesperson has confirmed that he is in the process of renouncing his American citizenship. Brock Harrison, Scheer’s spokesperson said, “Once Mr Scheer became leader of the Conservative Party of Canada, he decided he would renounce his US citizenship before the election.”
He added, “In August, he informed the United States government that he was renouncing his citizenship. He has submitted his paperwork and is currently waiting for confirmation from the embassy that he is no longer a dual-citizen.”
Harrison said Scheer and his sisters received US passports as children through one of their parents. But he did not renew his American passport as an adult and has not voted in any US elections. The Conservatives have in the past criticized leaders of other parties for holding dual citizenship. Former Liberal leader Stephane Dion and former NDP leader Tom Mulcair both faced flak for holding Canadian-French citizenship.
