Baby suffering from Zika dies
Abohar: Manavi, who had been suffering from Zika virus, died in Hanumangarh yesterday. She was born on July 7, 2016.The World Health Organisation (WHO) had on May 28 said India had reported three cases of deaths due to Zika virus (Microcephaly). It was detected through routine blood surveillance at a hospital in Ahmedabad.Experts said the three patients had not travelled overseas and had acquired the infection locally. The virus was spread by the Aedes mosquito, experts added.Manavi’s father Pradeep Dhayal, who got married in 2013, said he battled hard and also got a loan of Rs 6 lakh by some banks, but was told by medical specialists that there were no specific treatments for Zika infection and there was no known way to reverse damage done to a developing baby.A vaccine is in being researched, but is years away from the market. He had also written to state Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje to help in getting Manavi treated at super-specialty hospital in New Delhi or Mumbai.Manavi was born at a private hospital in Hisar. Her weight rose from one kg to 6 kg later. Lab tests indicated a hole in her heart. Later, she kept on losing weight and consumed water or milk only.Specialists finally detected that she was a suffering from Zika virus. At a Jaipur hospital, her father was told that hole in her heart could be plugged but as of now Zika virus treatment was not available anywhere in India. Such patient could survive a maximum for two years, doctors had said.
