Brampton City Council will debate LRT debate on Oct. 27
Brampton/Sept. 15, 2015
Controversial proposal of LRT in Brampton will be debated again by City Councilors on October 27 in a second attempt to decide about the fate of this $1.6 billion project.
Special meeting will take place at Rose Theatre at 7 PM on October 27. City Mayor Linda Jeffery has sent a letter to city councilors confirming the date and venue.
Previously announced special meeting for October 16 was postponed on the request of some councilors as they needed more time to study and have a consensus on the issue. The province has set a deadline of October 31 to have a final decision on the issue. City will have to accept or lose the proposal and the province has also ruled out any possibility of altering the rout of the LRT.
Ontario’s Minister of Transport Steven Del Duca told at a town hall meeting in Brampton last week that if Brampton council goes against the proposal, the Metrolinx will simply shorten the route and LRT will run up to Steeles Avenue. Approximate cost of 190 million of the reduced part of the route will go back to the Moving Ontario Forward Plan.
