Canada India Foundation to donate $20,000 to CRPF Jawans massacred in Kashmir

Toronto, 14 January: Canada India Foundation (CIF) announced a $20,000 contribution to the families of the 40 CRPF jawans massacred in Jammu & Kashmir’s Pulwama district on 14 January 2019 by Jaish-E-Mohammed terrorists.

Anil Shah, Chair, CIF, condemned the attack and described it as “a crime against humanity”.

He said, “The $20,000 amount is our Foundation’s token to the families of the martyred soldiers; it is a small gesture on our part to reach out to these families in their moment of grief. We wish to convey to them that all Indians and people of Indian origin globally deeply value the martyrdom of these soldiers.”

Traditionally, CIF’s annual golf tournament has raised charity for the families of Canadian and Indian fallen soldiers. Mr. Shah added that the 2019 annual charity golf tournament of the Foundation will focus on raising charity for the CRPF jawans.

Mr. Satish Thakkar, CIF’s National Convener, said, “We are deeply saddened with today’s tragic incident and convey our heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims of this dastardly attack.”

He explained that CIF’s commitment to the families of fallen soldiers started three years ago when the Foundation began contributing to Bharat Ke Veer (India’s Brave Hearts), a fund-raising initiative by India’s Ministry of Home Affairs, on behalf of members of the Indian Armed Forces, along with Canadian armed forces.

“This fund allows contributions to be made to specific families of fallen soldiers. We have contributed to this fund for the last three years and this year we will focus on the 40 soldiers killed today in Kashmir, along with our usual contribution to families of Canadian fallen soldiers,” Mr. Thakkar added.

Established in 2007, Canada India Foundation is a Canadian public policy think tank that has a 360-degree approach to Canada – India relations and creating opportunities for Indo-Canadians in Canadian mainstream organizations that decide on policy matters.

Annually, CIF honours a global Indian by bestowing the CIF Global Indian Award. The award is presented to an outstanding person who has demonstrated global leadership, vision, and personal excellence. It also organizes sectoral forums to promote trade between Canada and India in important sectors.
