Federal By-elections Liberals win 2 in Ontario, Tories win 2 in Alberta
Though there were By-elections in four federal ridings but the focus was mainly on Trinity-Spadina. An interesting fact about this riding is that since 1972,every time the Liberals won Trinity-Spadina they have gone on to form government; every time the NDP took the riding, the Conservatives have taken power. This time Adam Vaughan from the Liberal party won the election though a strong challenge was expected from Joe Cressy from NDP. Benjamin Sharma was the candidate from Conservative party. Since 2006 the riding had been held by former NDP MP Olivia Chow, who is now running to be mayor of the city.In another GTA riding Scarborough-Agincourt, Arnold Chan, a lawyer and former political aide at the Ontario legislature, managed to keep the riding in the Liberal fold, beating elementary school teacher and Conservative candidate Trevor Ellis. In Fort McMurray-Athabasca, ground zero in the oilsands debate, Liberal Kyle Harrietha had some 35 per cent of the vote but went down to defeat at the hands of Tory candidate
David Yurdiga. Only in the southern Alberta riding of Macleod were the Liberals not a factor where former journalist
John Barlow cruised to victory with about 69 per cent of the vote, well clear of Liberal rival Dustin Fuller.
