Cong leaders hijack debt-waiver event
Muktsar: The local Congress leadership virtually hijacked the state government’s debt waiver programme in Muktsar on Thursday.A number of local Congress leaders, along with former MLA Karan Kaur Brar, district Congress president Gurmeet Singh Khuddian, PPCC general secretary Jagjit Singh ‘Honey Fattanwala’, were not just present on the stage at the subdivision-level programme organised by the district administration but also handed over debt waiver certificates issued by the state government to some farmers.Besides, Karan Kaur Brar was the chief guest on the occasion and local SDM Rajpal Singh presided over the function. None of them holds any constitutional post.Other Congress leaders present on the stage who handed over debt waiver certificates along with government officials included Bhinder Sharma, Harpal Sandhu, Prabhjot Singh, Simarjit Singh ‘Bheena’ and Sharanjit Singh Sandhu.During her address, Karan Kaur Brar said, “All genuine people are being given the benefit by the state government. As of now, nearly 10,000 farmers have been given the benefit of this scheme and a debt of Rs 49.41 crore has been waived in the district.”This is not the first such instance when members of the ruling party have taken control of the stage at a government event. Akali leaders during the previous SAD-BJP regime even used to inaugurate buildings constructed with state funds.Rajpal Singh, SDM, Muktsar, said debt of all eligible farmers had been waived by the government and if someone could not get the benefit, he/she might contact the officers concerned.
