Congress in tow, Rahul Gandhi files nomination for party president post

New Delhi: Top Congress leaders in tow, Rahul Gandhi on Monday filed his nomination for the post of party President’s election, making his takeover of the party a mere formality.Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh led the process of nominations for Gandhi as his mother and Congress chief Sonia Gandhi refrained from attending the process physically. She, however, was among four lead proposers for her son’s election along with Manmohan Singh and, Ghulam Nabi Azad. Singh exuded confidence in Rahul Gandhi’s leadership saying, “We have full faith in the leadership of Rahul Gandhi. His diligence will pay off one day.”

Four sets of nomination papers were filed by Congress Working Committee (CWC) members and AICC office-bearers.

Each state delegation filed separate forms each requiring the signatures of 10 proposers.

Gandhi was still signing his nomination papers (he must sign each nomination form and there are around 70) when this report was being written.

As the process continued, the Congress fielded leaders of all generations in the party to demolish Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s charge that the election of the party president was undemocratic and rigged.

Veterans who rejected this charge included Azad, former ministers Sushil Kumar Shinde and Kamal Nath, former CMs Sheila Dikshit, Harish Rawat and Bhupinder Singh Hooda as well as a host of party’s young faces. Each one of them stated their support for Gandhi on record hailing the day as “historic “ and saying that the Congress would return to power under Gandhi.

Anand Sharma said the BJP and the PM should introspect in their charges of dynastic perpetuation on Congress and said, “We reject the allegations of the PM with contempt. Rahul Gandhi is being proposed as the Congress president unanimously. This is a democratic process.

The entire process is expected to take until 3 pm to conclude as Rahul Gandhi is to sign close to 70 nomination forms of support for him.

Gandhi is the sole candidate who filed his nomination for the election today. This is the last date for nomination filing. His anointment as party chief is now a given.
