Cops lathicharge protesting unemployed teachers
Sangrur, September 22
Members of the ETT and TET pass unemployed teachers union have alleged that the police used water cannons and lathicharged them while they were trying to march towards the residence of Education Minister Vijay Inder Singla as part of a protest here on Sunday. Ten protesters and six cops are injuried.
Though the protesters have lifted their blockade from the Sangrur-Patiala bypass after officials handed them a letter for a meeting with Singla in Chandigarh on September 30, the protesters have announced that their fast-unto-death and protest atop water tank on Sunam road would continue till their recruitment.
“Policemen attacked me with sticks and did not stop even after removing my turban. I have suffered injuries on my back, my legs and arms,” alleged Harpeet Singh.
Deep Banarsi, state press secretary of the union, said 10 members, including Mani, Gurpreet Kamboj, Sukhdev Singh, Des Raj, Harpreet Singh, Gursimrat Singh, Umesh Kumar, Rajvir Kaur, Surjit Kaur and Deepak Kamboj, have suffered injuries.
“We were protesting peacefully but the cops attacked us with sticks without any provocation. Our protest will continue as we are not afraid of lathis,” Deep said.
Sangrur DSP (Rural) Satpal Sharma said six cops had suffered injuries in the scuffle. He, however, denied that there was a lathicharge.
“We did not stop them from protesting, but when they tried to cross the police barricades, there was a push and pull, which led to injuries to cops as well as the protesters. They lifted their road blockade after getting assurance of a meeting with the minister,” the DSP added.
