CWG gold lifter Sanjita fails dope test, suspects sabotage

Weightlifter Khumukcham Sanjita Chanu has been provisionally suspended after her sample returned positive for a steroid. The International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) announced the decision on its website.

Chanu, who won the gold in the 53kg category at the recent Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, was sent home from the national camp after the news was first shared with her.

“IWF reports that the sample of Ms. Sanjita Chamu KHUMUKCHAM (IND) has returned an Adverse Analytical Finding for Testosterone (S1.1 Anabolic Agents). As a consequence, the Athlete is provisionally suspended in view of a potential anti-doping rule violation,” an IWF statement said. “In any case where it is determined that the Athlete did not commit an anti-doping rule violation, the relevant decision will also be published.”

2017 sample?

It is claimed that the sample dates back to last year, when she represented India at the World Championships in Anaheim, USA. Sanjita finished a lowly 13th in the World Championship in November with a total lift of 177kg. The Manipuri lifted a total of 192kg to win the gold in Gold Coast. If the doping violation results are confirmed, Sanjita may lose her Commonwealth Games medal. Interestingly, the adverse analytical finding was notified to Sanjita on May 15 and she was asked to stay mum on the situation. Indian Weightlifting Federation (IWF) secretary general Sahdev Yadav was unavailable for comments.

Life over: Sanjita

The 24-year-old Sanjita is distraught with the developments and said she suspects foul play. “I can’t believe what has happened,” Chanu told The Tribune over the phone from Imphal. “Here I was happy with the Commonwealth Games gold medal and I was looking forward to performing well in the Asian Games, and then I am told that I have failed a dope test! Someone needs to explain it to me.”

“I have been giving my sample since 2010, sometimes twice a week. I don’t know how many times I have given both urine and blood samples,” she added. “I take the supplements that the federation wants us to take and I have not taken any supplement from outside. How can this happen? Has someone changed my sample? Was this done to finish my career? I don’t know and we need to find out because my head is spinning right now.”
