Dalai Lama on tour amid health concerns
Dharamsala: As the Dalai Lama left for an 11-day tour of Lithuania and Latvia on Sunday, speculation was rife regarding his health. Media reports said the 82-year-old Tibetan spiritual leader was suffering from prostate cancer and that the ailment was in an advanced stage. The Dalai Lama, it was reported, had been visiting the US for treatment over the past few years. The Central Tibetan Administration, however, denied the reports. Tsering Dhondup of the Tibetan Policy Institute claimed the Dalai Lama was in sound health. Though a frequent traveller, the restricted movement of the Dalai Lama over the past few months had fuelled concerns regarding his well-being. Apparently aware of the anxiety among his followers, the Dalai Lama, on his last birthday, tried to allay fears, saying: “The doctors tell me I shall be hale and hearty for another 20 years. So be ready to celebrate my 90th birthday.” In 2011, the Dalai Lama had handed over the reins of the Tibetan government-in-exile to a democratically elected government.
