Decide on nation’s chowkidar: Rahul
Jaipur, January 9
Addressing a mammoth ‘Kisan Abhaar Rally’ here on Wednesday, the first after his party formed the government in Rajasthan, Congress president Rahul Gandhi promised farmers a long-term sustainable strategy to help them usher in another green revolution.
Observing it was the “janata (public)”, not parties, who were supreme in democracy, he told the cheering crowd: “The farmers (facing distress) showed PM Modi their might in the recent Assembly elections in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh” and that waiving farm loans was a small step towards addressing agriculture distress and “a new green revolution (harit kranti) was needed.”
Claiming that the PM had always been on the back foot whenever it was time to act, Rahul Gandhi assured the youth and farmers: “The Congress will always play on the front foot and address your demands and grievances. We told the farmers in MP, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh we would waive crop loan in 10 days. We did it after just two days in office.”
He promised that Congress governments, beginning with Rajasthan, would set up food processing units, cold storage plants and mega food parks in every district for the benefit of farmers.
Raising the Rafale issue, he mocked: “The PM with a 56 inches chest could not attend Parliament even for a minute to debate the issue, leaving it to woman Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to face Opposition queries. She spoke for over two-and-a-half hours, but could not give any definite answer, as sought by the Congress.” He further went on to say, “Janata ki adalat mein ek chowkidar ek mahila se kahata hai ki meri raksha karo, prantoo voh mahila dhai ghante mein PM ki raksha nahin kar pai. (The PM asked a woman to shield him in Parliament, but she failed to do so during her two-and-a-half-hour speech)”.
He reiterated the demand for a JPC probe into the aircraft deal, while seeking to know why the CBI Director (now reinstated by the Supreme court) was removed “in the middle of the night.”
As the Congress leader asked the youth and farmers to take a decision on the “chowkidar” in the coming Lok Sabha elections, “chowkidar chor hai” slogan rent the air. Rahul promised that if voted to power at the Centre, the Congress would hear “man ki baat of the people with the government keeping its door open 24 hours.”
