Farmer’s suicide: Week on, kin refuse to cremate body
Bathinda: Stalemate continued between farmers and the police department as the family of a farmer, who committed suicide, refused to cremate the body even after seven days of his death. The protest entered its fifth day today.Intensify their protest, the farmers along with the relatives of deceased Bhupinder Singh today blocked the Bathinda-Chandigarh highway at Rampura and even burnt an effigy of the Bathinda SSP for not registering a case against the police official and another person whose names were mentioned in the suicide note recovered from the deceased.BKU Sidhupur district president Baldev Singh Sandoha held a press conference in which he lashed out at the police for not registering the case. They alleged that a sub-inspector along with another person booked Bhupinder Singh in a “false” NDPS case and took Rs 7 lakh in March last year.Later, the Maur DSP conducted an inquiry into the case and he was found innocent. Even his name was dropped from the FIR, but now both persons again started harassing him and demanded Rs 5 lakh from him.Sandoha said they would continue the protest and not cremate the body till the accused were not arrested.Ballainwali police station SHO Inspector Sandeep Singh said a case had not been registered yet as a high-level probe was still going on. Further action would be taken in the case after the probe. Bhupinder Singh of Mandi Kalan village had committed suicide on November 20.
