Federal elections: More women candidates than 2011
Ottawa/Oct.14, 2015- According to a report released by Equal Voice, an advocacy group dedicated to electing more women, there are more women candidates this year than 2011 federal elections, but the group says that the numbers are still far from parity.
According to the report, 33 per cent of the candidates from the five major parties are women, which is two points up from the last election.
The NDP takes lead with 43 per cent representation to women, followed by the Green party with 42 per cent women. The Liberal party has 31 per cent female candidate, the Bloc Quebecois 28 per cent and the Conservative party has 20 per cent female candidates running for the federal parliament.
At current rate, complete gender parity will take more 45 years-11 elections away, says Equal Voice spokesperson.
