Furore as Central varsity student dies on campus
Bathinda: Students of the Central University of Punjab (CUP) blocked the Bathinda-Mansa highway for five hours on Tuesday after a student died of cardiac arrest on Monday night. Alleging medical negligence on the part of the university, the students began a protest on the campus and then moved to the highway.Sushant Sagar, a second-year student of MSC bio-chemistry and microbial science at CUP, fainted while playing basketball on the campus on Monday evening. He was taken to the university’s medical centre and later shifted to Max Hospital where he was declared brought dead. The protesters alleged that it was due to the ill-equipped medical centre at the university that Sagar lost his life. “Although there was an ambulance parked on the campus, the driver had gone home and took some time to reach the campus. We urged the CUP authorities to take Sushant to the hospital in their private vehicles but they refused to do so. The delay of 45 minutes claimed Sushant’s life,” alleged a student. The protesters demanded a judicial probe into the incident and the “fake insurance policy” given to university students, besides VC Prof RK Kohli’s resignation. The VC finally addressed them and admitted the loopholes in the medical care given to Sushant. He said the ambulance driver had been suspended and the university would bear the cost of ferrying the body to Saharsa district in Bihar.
