Gritty Gambhir hangs up his boots

New Delhi, December 4

Gautam Gambhir is retiring from all forms of cricket. The former India opener announced his decision in an emotional post on social media on Tuesday. The Ranji Trophy encounter between Delhi and Andhra, starting on Thursday at the Feroze Shah Kotla, will be the left-hander’s last match.

The murmurs of his impending retirement were doing the rounds ever since he stepped down as Delhi captain last month.  “…After more than 15 years of cricket for my country, I want to retire from playing this beautiful game. Despite all the aches and pains; fears and failures I won’t mind a repeat of this in my next life too. But obviously with a few more wins for India, a few more hundreds and in the next life maybe a few 5-wicket hauls as well,” he said in the video.

“…The next Ranji Trophy game against Andhra will be my last day in the sun. It is all coming to an end from where it started — Feroze Shah Kotla. I am big one on loyalty. I am glad that I could finish with the teams that I started my journey with. In this case, ending with both Delhi Daredevils and Delhi domestic side has given me immense satisfaction,” he said. In a career that spanned over 15 years, Gambhir made significant contributions in India colours. None more than the match-winning 97 in the 2011 World Cup final against Sri Lanka. Before that, he top- scored with a stroke-filled 75 in the World T20 final against Pakistan in 2007 as the young team won the first major ICC Trophy after a wait of 24 years.

He was equally adept and gritty in Test cricket as well. He holds the record of being the only Indian to have scored five successive Test centuries to date. Gambhir was named as ICC Test Player of the Year in 2009.
