Keeping Highways Safe in the Huntsville Area

Ontario has awarded a new highway maintenance contract for the Huntsville area, taking effect September 1, 2018.

The award follows a Request for Proposals (RFP) issued on September 14, 2017 to choose a new year-round service provider through an open and transparent competitive process. The RFP included several new measures to strengthen winter maintenance activities, including enhancements to winter equipment requirements, road patrolling requirements and the use of winter materials.

The current service provider will continue to provide uninterrupted services until their contract ends on August 31, 2018. This includes continuing to deliver enhanced service levels implemented in the last few winters. Since 2013, across the province, contractors have added 163 pieces of equipment to plow more highways, ramps and shoulders faster and more frequently and spread salt and sand better. We have also increased the use of anti-icing liquid which is sprayed directly onto the pavement before a storm to prevent ice from forming and snow from sticking to the pavement.

Ontario’s highways are among the safest in North America, and the province is committed to keeping them as safe as possible during winter weather conditions.

Ontario’s plan to create fairness and opportunity during this period of rapid economic change includes a higher minimum wage and better working conditions, free tuition for hundreds of thousands of students, easier access to affordable child care, and free prescription drugs for everyone under 25 through the biggest expansion of medicare in a generation.
