Ludhiana man FIDE World amateur chess champ in u-2300 group
Chandigarh: Arvinder Preet from Ludhiana has become the first Indian to win the Fide World Amateur Championship in the under-2300 category.He became the champion in the world event that concluded at Cagliari, Italy, earlier on Monday. Arvinder scored seven out of nine points in the nine-round competition. His rating is 2069. He was seeded 26 in the 45-player tournament but played with precision to emerge victorious.The 36-year-old works as a technician with the railways at Sahnewal. This was his first international tournament.Arvinder has been playing chess since 1996. He was Punjab State champion for four times and has won many other tournaments in India.FIDE, the international body of chess, had started rating category-wise world championship to encourage non-professional chess players.
