Manmohan Singh mourns Surinder Singla’s demise, writes to his wife
New Delhi: Former prime minister Manmohan Singh on Friday led the condolences on the demise of Surinder Singla, who served as the finance minister of Punjab between 2002 and 2007 and earlier as a Rajya Sabha MP from 1992 to 1998.In a personal condolence message to Sushma Singla, the wife of the late leader from Punjab, Manmohan described the loss as “sad” and noted, “Surinder Singla ji’s service to the party and the nation will always be remembered by all, especially by the people of Punjab.”Singla, 78, breathed his last at 6.18 am in AIIMS here on Thursday. His last rites are being held here on Friday.He was rushed to the super-specialty hospital in wee hours of Thursday after his blood pressure dropped severely and he complained of breathlessness.Singla had not quite recovered from a severe head injury he sustained some years ago after a fall in a hotel room in the US. Lately, too, Singla had not been keeping well and had returned home only on June 23 after a spell of hospitalisation from AIIMS. He had then complained of pneumonia.Manmohan, in his condolence letter to Singla’s wife, said, “I have learnt with profound sorrow about the sad demise of your beloved husband Shri Surinder Singla. I join numerous admirers and well-wishers of Shri Surinder Singla in mourning his sad demise and convey to you and other members of your family my heartfelt condolences. Mr Surinder Singla served both as a very good parliamentarian as a member of the Rajya Sabha and a very good Finance Minister in the previous Congress government in Punjab. His services to the nation and the party will be remembered by all, especially by the people of Punjab. My wife joins me in conveying to you and members of your family our heartfelt condolences on this bereavement. We pray to God to give all of you the strength to bear this great loss with courage and fortitude.”Condolences were also offered by former MPs Gurcharan Dadhahoor and Charanjit Singh Channi and former L-G of Puducherry Virendra Kataria, all personal friends of Singla.
