Mayor Crombie Meets with Peel Police Services Board Chair Amrik Singh Ahluwalia

Mississauga – I welcome the opportunity to work alongside Chair Ahluwalia, and all Board Members, to implement policy solutions that elevate Peel Police’s reputation as a modern, effective and respected police force, Mayor Bonnie Crombie said today.

Mayor Crombie made the comments following her first meeting with new Peel Police Services Board Chair, Amrik Singh Ahluwalia, held at City Hall. In January 2016, the Board unanimously elected Mr. Ahluwalia chair.

“We are now at an important turning point on the Peel Police Services Board,” Mayor Crombie said. “Moving forward, we have to ensure that the priorities of the Board reflect the challenges facing our rapidly growing and diverse neighbourhoods,” Mayor Crombie added.

Of note, Mayor Crombie and Chair Ahluwalia discussed the provincial government’s efforts to modernize the delivery of community safety with the launch of the Ministry of Community Safety and Correction Services’ Strategy for a Safer Ontario – a new blueprint for effective, sustainable, and community-based policing.

Chair Ahluwalia said “The decisions made by the Board have profound impacts on two of Canada’s largest cities – Mississauga and Brampton. The Board must ensure that openness, accountability, and public confidence guide our efforts to keep families and neighbourhoods safe.”

Mayor Crombie concluded “As we look toward the weeks and months ahead, we will build on the reforms and progress made last year, including undertaking a comprehensive review and overhaul of the practice of street checks.”

“I look forward to working with Chair Ahluwalia and the entire Board to ensure our police force is progressive and responsive to the community it serves.”
