MLA got demolish drive halted, illegal colonies dot his backyard
Jalandhar: Upcoming illegal colonies dot the dingy Basti area of Jalandhar West constituency, represented by Congress MLA Sushil Rinku, who recently got a demolition drive halted. Most such colonies do not even have signages bearing the name or the Punjab Apartment and Property Regulation Act (PAPRA) number, let alone an office of the builder. Even if the state government comes up with a policy to regularise illegal colonies by the month-end, these colonies are unlikely to get an approval.A Tribune team during a tour of Rinku’s constituency visited an illegal colony along Kala Sanghian road, which was ordered to be demolished by the Town Planning Department a day after Local Bodies Minister Navjot Sidhu’s visit. The colony, spread over 1.5 acres, is owned by Congress leader Major Singh, who sat beside MLA Rinku on a JCB machine to stall the drive. The colony has 20-foot roads, a couple of under-construction houses, and an MC water supply line. Belying the claim of the MLA, who prevented the razing of 2-marla houses, residents say water taps and sewage connection points were in place till two days ago, but have now been removed.
