No namaz on Saryu banks in Ayodhya after priests protest

Lucknow: Following a heavy deployment of police force on the banks of Saryu in Ayodhya on Thursday, approximately 250 Muslims who had collected to perform wuzu (ablutions) and namaz dispersed without performing the ritual. The Rashtriya Muslim Manch (RMM), an affiliate of the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS), had given a call for the namaz and Quran recitation on the banks of Saryu in which an estimated 1500 Muslim clerics were expected to participate. However, in a tweet, the RSS has distanced itself from the event. Sangh’s all India campaign chief Arun Kumar tweeted: “The communal namaz is being organized in Ayodhya by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), such news has come in some media, it is completely unfounded and untrue”.While the district administration denied having prevented the event, the presence of the district magistrate and heavy police force made it clear that the protest from a section of the priests in Ayodhya had made the administration obstruct the event.Later the event was shifted to the ‘mazaar’ of Hazrat Nooh in Ayodhya where a few dozen Muslim clerics took part in ‘Quran Khwani’ (recitation of the Quran).According to Rashtriya Muslim Manch national media coordinator Raza Rizvi: “There was no programme for offering namaz. A large group of Islamic scholars and clerics came from adjoining districts and wanted to perform ‘wuzu’ (ablution) with the running water of Saryu in Ayodhya because it is believed in Islam that running water is pure.”
