Partial band in Punjab over dera chief issue
Chandigarh/Sept.30, 2015 – ‘Punjab Bandd’ call given by some panthic groups, to protest against exoneration of Dera Sacha Sauda chief by Akal Takhat, got a partial response. Punjab Police cane-charged activists of some organizations who were trying to force shopkeepers to close their businesses.
In Moga, police used batons to disperse a group of activists when they were trying to force people to close down their shops. The shops were open in the morning, however, after the protest from Sikh outfits, shopkeepers decided close down their shops. Around 20 people were also arrested in Bathinda, though the bandh call failed to have any major impact.
In Amritsar, bandd call didn’t get any response.The markets were open since morning and the public transport, schools and other educational institutes remained unaffected. The band also failed to have any impact in Jalandhar, Patiala and Ludhiana.
Call for band was given by a faction of Sikh Students Federation, Damdami Taksal, Akali Dal (Delhi) and United Akali Dal.
Meanwhile, The Jathehdar of Akal Takht has announced setting up of a committee to review the entire issue in the wake of the protest.
