Sangrur police release AAP leader, Cong holds dharna
Sangrur, July 28
Perturbed after the release of an accused by the police authorities earned bad name for her party in a murder case, Sunam Congress halqa in charge Daman Thind Bajwa, along with her husband Harman Bajwa and other party leaders, blocked the Sangrur-Barnala road for six hours. The issue pertains to the arrest and subsequent release of renowned Punjabi song writer and senior AAP leader Bachan Bedil, who is facing an FIR for allegedly helping his brother in escaping police custody in a murder case.
For the murder of Mall Singh (58) from Badrukhan village, the police on Friday registered a case against Parmjit Singh and Sukhbir Singh (brother of Bedil). But Bedil allegedly helped his Sukhbir escape the police post of Badrukhan on Saturday within some hours of his arrest.
The Badrukhan police on Saturday night released Bedil after the registration of an FIR against him under Sections 224,109 and 420 of the IPC after the issuance of a notice to him, but on Sunday morning, when the family members of the deceased learnt about the release of Bedil, they approached the police. Some Congress leaders alleged that policemen told villagers that they were under pressure from “higher authorities”, but did not disclose any name.
Villagers thought that Congress leaders had pressurised the police to release Bedil. The relatives of the deceased, along with villagers, blocked the Sangrur-Barnala road near the Badrukhan police post.
After getting information about the allegations against the party, Daman Thind Bajwa, who is also the spokesperson of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee, along with her husband, reached the protest site and called senior police officers. They challenged all policemen to name the authorities who had pressurised them to release Bedil, but the cops failed to disclose any name.
“The police officers are spreading misinformation that higher authorities have pressurised them to release Bedil. How can they release an accused by only issuing a notice? The police must add Section 120B of the IPC in the FIR against Bedil. We challenge them to name the higher authorities as they do not have any right to defame our Congress leadership,” Daman said while sitting on a protest.
The protest was lifted after the police promised to arrest Bedil within 24 hours and add Section 120B of the IPC in the FIR.
Bedil has denied the allegation and said the case was politically motivated.
“Since Bedil is a senior leader of our party, the police have registered a false case against him. We will gherao the Sangrur SSP office if the police fail to cancel the FIR,” said Harpal Cheema, Leader of the Opposition.
Sangur SSP Sandeep Garg said an investigation was underway. “There was some misunderstanding and our officers are conducting investigations about the role of Bedil. They are also ascertaining facts on who spread misinformation about the higher authorities,” he said.
