SGPC puts its stamp on Akal Takht’s decision to pardon dera chief

Amritsar/Sept.29.2015 – SGPC on Tuesday put its stamp on the Akal Takht’s September 24 ‘gurmatta’  pardoning Dera Sacha Sauda head Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh. The half-page resolution of approval was read out by SGPC chief Avtar Singh Makkar during a meeting at Teja Singh Samundri Hall of the Golden Temple complex here. The meeting was attended by about 75 of the 180-odd SGPC members.

According to some media reports, instead of putting the resolution before the members for discussion the SGPC chief himself declared it as “passed unanimously”.

A couple of SGPC members raised their hands seeking permission to speak, but Makkar adjourned the meeting abruptly. The entire proceedings were over in just five minutes. SGPC member Kiranjot Kaur was quoted by some Punjab media criticizing the decision taken by Akal Takhat and the Tuesday meeting, “What was the need for holding a meeting if no one was to be allowed to express his or her opinion on the issue? Such a resolution could have been passed even without calling a meeting,”

SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar later claimed that the decision was unanimous  and was taken in the larger interests of peace and harmony in Punjab.
