Speeding vehicle kills newcomer Priyanka Mittal, 22
Ottawa – Priyanka Mittal, 22, who had just moved to Ottawa from India at the end of August to study at Carleton University, died while crossing West Hunt Club Road in an industrial part of south Ottawa just after 9pm on Friday night. Emergency crews responded to a report that said a pedestrian had been struck by a vehicle. Paramedics said the female victim had lost pulse when they arrived at the scene and could not be revived. Police informed that they were looking for the driver in a white car and later said the driver had come to talk to them. Investigation in the case is going on but no charges have been pressed against anyone, police said on Monday. According to her uncle, Rajeev Goel, “her family is in really great shock. Her father and mother are really inconsolable. They’re reminded of Priyanka again and again because they had sent her for studies and they had so many aspirations – so many for her career. All of a sudden this has all happened. It’s really very sad.” The family has approached the Indian and Canadian governments for help to bring her body home. Goel told media: “We just want to know the procedure, how fast we can bring the body back here… her father and mother’s wish is that the body should be cremated here in India.” Goel also informed the family will visit the Canadian consulate in Chandigarh to seek help.
