Canada, India & Pakistan among 71 participating nations
The 2014 Commonwealth Games are being held in Glasgow, Scotland, from 23 July to 3 August 2014.It will be the largest multi-sport event ever held in Scotland with 4,100 competing
athletes, although the country previously hosted the 1970 and 1986 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh. There will be 71 participating nations at the 2014 Commonwealth Games. There are a total of 17 sports and 261 medal events that will be contested at the 2014 Commonwealth Games. Canada will field a total team of 265 athletes, competing in 16 out of
the 17 sports on the Glasgow 2014 Games programme (all sports except netball). This is the largest team ever fielded by the CGC for Commonwealth Games not held on Canadian soil.
Some interesting facts about Canada’s 2014 Commonwealth Games Team:
” Canada’s youngest athlete, at 16 years old, is Isabela Onyshko of Artistic Gymnastics, born June 23rd, 1998. Canada’s oldest athlete at 78 years old, is Al Hanet, member of the Lawn Bowls team (Para-Sport B2/B3 Mixed Pairs), born June 27th, 1936.
” The most Commonwealth medals won by a Canadian on the 2014 Team is Susan Nattrass, a trapshooter and Canada’s flag bearer at the 2014 Games, who has won a total of 8 medals (3 silver, 5 bronze).
” The team members who have competed at the most Commonwealth Games are Susan Nattrass (4 previous Games- Auckland 1990, Manchester 2002, Melbourne 2006, Delhi
2010) and her colleague on the shooting team, Metodi Igorov (4 previous Games – Kuala Lumpur 1998, Manchester 2002,

” India will field a strong 215 member contingent, their second largest ever, with athletics forming the biggest squad of 41.
” The sports ministry has cleared the 215 athletes from 14 sporting disciplines, including seven para-athletes, at government cost, along with a contingent of 90 officials, coaches and support staff.
” The Glasgow Games will have 17 sports and 261 medal events and India will not be fielding athletes only in three disciplines — netball, rugby sevens and triathlon. Pakistan to Send 62-Member Team, the nation will participate in eight sports — badminton, boxing, gymnastics, shooting, swimming, table tennis, weightlifting and wrestling. Pakistan hockey will, shockingly, miss out on CWG action this year as their entry was not sent. Hockey – Australia has been the dominant force in Commonwealth Games Men’s Hockey, securing every title since its introduction in 1998. Challenges in both competitions from other medal-winning nations including , England, India, New Zealand and Malaysia. Australian women have also dominated the Gold medal spot at previous Commonwealth Games. However, they still find themselves below New Zealand and England in the current World Rankings.
