Statement from Rona Ambrose, Leader of the Official Opposition and interim Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada, on the National Day of Remembrance for Victims of Terrorism

Today, Rona Ambrose issued the following statement on the National Day of Remembrance for Victims of Terrorism:“Thirty-one years ago today, an act of terrorism took the lives of 329 people on Air India Flight 182.

“That’s why, every June 23rd, we pause to remember all victims of terrorism, and to express our solidarity with the families of those lost.

“The latest terror-inspired attack in Orlando is a grim reminder of the threat and hatred presented by violent jihadist ideologies.

“It is a threat fueled by acts of terror against innocent civilians. As we saw recently with the murders of two Canadian citizens by a terrorist group in the Philippines, and with ISIS’s ongoing persecution of religious minorities, it is a dangerous ideology not confined to any one corner of the globe.

“That is why we have always stood in support of Canada’s military involvement in the fight against ISIS, and why we value the work of our security and law enforcement agencies in keeping Canadians safe.

“Today, we reflect on the lives lost, from Air India, to 9/11, to the murders of Corporal Nathan Cirillo and Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent in 2014, and far too many others.

“On the National Day of Remembrance for Victims of Terrorism, we recommit ourselves to the fight against terrorism.”
