Sukhchain Brar admits killing his wife
Sarnia- Sukhchain Singh Brar, 52, a Brampton truck driver has finally admitted to killing his wife, Gurpreet Brar, 37, by hitting her with a hammer and then setting his truck on fire on Highway 402 near Sarnia. Gurpreet’s body was found burnt in the truck. Brar was charged with first-degree murder after the death of his wife, Gurpreet on January 31, 2016.
As Brar’s trial commenced in Superior Court in Sarnia, the Crown and defence lawyers read out a number of admissions to the jury that included how Brar killed his wife while giving details of their married life. They got married in 1999, and were residing in Brampton with their three kids, Brar’s mother and brother.
The court was told Gurpreet was depressed due to tensions at home and planned to move back to India. However no one in the community could make out that the two were not at good terms because the couple seemed very happy due to the loving photographs they posted on their facebook page.
Gurpreet booked a flight for herself and two youngest kids, and signed a will and power of attorney, thus handing over all her assets to her husband before leaving Canada. Brar pleaded guilty to manslaughter earlier but the Crown rejected his plea saying according to the Criminal Code first degree murder is defined as planned and deliberate, while manslaughter is a killing due to provocation. Hearing starts today and is expected to last four weeks.
