Moga: A “tainted” Congress leader, Inderpreet Singh Bunty, was elected as president of the Dharamkot Municipal Council today.Local Congress MLA Sukhjit Singh Lohgarh helped him to win the election. Bunty’s main rival Gurmeet Mukhija, also of the Congress, along with two of his supporters Kishan Hans and Amarjit Singh walked out of the House during the election process. The ruling party had already swept the polls by winning 12 seats in total 13 wards. The SAD had won only on one seat. Inderpreet Bunty is a leading trader of the area in the commodity business. However, he has a “tainted” past and is a defaulter of the state government. An FIR was registered against Inderpreet Singh Bunty, co-owner of Kwality Rice Mills Private Limited, Dharamkot, in December 2014 for allegedly siphoning paddy worth Rs 24 crore. The rice that was to be delivered to the FCI was reportedly sold on the black market by him.A criminal case with regard to embezzlement of paddy worth Rs 24 crore is pending against him in a local judicial court. The Vigilance Bureau had conducted the investigations against him. Two rice mills owned by him were sealed by the state-owned procurement agencies. After walking out of the House meeting during the election, Mukhija claimed that he was a better candidate for the president’s post because he had a clean image. It was unfortunate that the party leadership had not chosen him for the post. However, Mukhija said he was still in the Congress.
