The Canada Food Guide is based on evidence, science and research, yet the Conservatives are politicizing with Canadian’s health.

Brampton, ON – On Wednesday, July 17, 2019, Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer criticized the Liberal Government’s implementation of the new Canada Food Guide.

Health Canada restructured the Food Guide in January after extensive research and consultation, recommending eating more proteins from plants, more vegetables and fruits, and more whole grain foods. It is the first major change to the document since 2007.

The Health Minister, Ginette Petitpas Taylor, said that the Conservatives should not spread lies, as this Food Guide was welcomed by Canadians and has been called one of the best in the world.

The Canada Food Guide is based on evidence, science and research and has received widespread support across the board by organizations such as the Canadian Digestive Health Foundation, and Dieticians of Canada.

Andrew Scheer’s comments are not based on the truth or on facts. The Liberal Government is standing by the new Canada Food Guide.  He claimed the new Food Guide was not based on science and lacked proper consultation. He also told the Dairy Farmers of Canada that if he wins the next federal election, he will review the guide, claiming it is biased against some healthy foods.

Quotes:

“This food guide is a great leap forward for the health and wellbeing of Canadians. Conservatives should not play politics with such important matters for the sake of harnessing a few more votes.”

~ Sonia Sidhu, Member of Parliament for Brampton South
