UK to submit firm proposals for divorce deal : Boris Johnson
With Britain due to leave 28-nation bloc European Union at the end of this month, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has confirmed that they will make firm proposals for a new Brexit deal within days. Shrouded in sexual harassment allegations, Johnson said, “This is the moment when the rubber hits the road.” He added details will be disclosed “very soon.”
EU leaders are at the end of their patience as UK fails to set out detailed plans for an open border between UK’s Northern Ireland and EU-member Ireland. Johnson currently maintains Britain will leave the bloc on October 31 as scheduled, with or without a deal. “There is no point in doing Brexit if you stay locked in the customs union and locked in the single market with no say,” Johnson said. He didn’t say what Britain’s proposed alternative is, but has so far, suggested the idea of a common area for livestock and agricultural products, plus largely untested “technological solutions.”
Former prime minister Theresa May’s plans for Brexit was rejected three times by the UK Parliament as she faced opposition to the “backstop”. The insurance policy is designed to ensure there is no return to customs posts or other infrastructure on the Irish border. The plan is opposed as it would keep the UK tied up to EU trade rules in order to avoid customs checks, and will inadvertently limit the country’s ability to strike new trade deals with the international markets.
Meanwhile, Johnson said he wants to strike a deal with the EU to replace May’s rejected Brexit agreement. He added that the UK can handle any bumps that come from leaving the EU without a deal. If that is the case, the Union, UK’s biggest trading partner will instantly impose customs checks and other barriers between Britain and itself.
