1. Today people are engaged in Canada Day celebrations and wish their country the best. There will be celebrations in Ottawa and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will participate besides Canada’s Governor General. On Canada’s on its 149th birthday Trudeau has congratulated fellow Canadians.
2. Alberta’s NDP government has prepared framework for $15 minimum wage amid fears that a lot of jobs in the private sector can go. But Alberta’s Labour Minister Christina Gray has dismissed all those fears saying it was NDP’s election promise and must be fulfilled. Gray was talking to media this morning and informed that the Restaurants Canada and other groups have told her of job losses but her government believes that current minimum wage of $11:20 is less and does not ensure people have enough to pay for their rent, transport and groceries. Gray said the minimum wage of $11.20 will increase by $1 on October 1 this year with an additional $1.40 in October of 2017 and another $1.40 in 2018. David Swann of Liberal party has criticized the plan saying Alberta’s economy is already not doing well and this move will further damage it. Also through this move the NDP government has shown no consideration for small businesses.
3. Near Kensington Market today at 5am two people died and one got injured serious and had to be rushed to the hospital in an after-hours party shooting.
4. Police in Mississauga has identified two bodies who died in a house explosion in Mississauga, that took place on Tuesday evening at 4:20pm on Hickory Dr. They are identified as Robert Nadler and Dianne Page who were the owners of the house. According to details, in 1982 Nadler was convicted in a murder charge also. The explosion also damaged the nearby houses.
5. A section of press has carried a news item that in Mississauga Peel police charged a man in 2014 under a ride spot check and found he was driving under the influence of alcohol. However, the court has dismissed his case as during investigations and drug tests being carried, the man’s turban was removed but never returned. The court considered it infringement of one’s religious rights and found the man not guilty. Several people have reacted on this decision.
6. Another section of press has also highlighted the BBQ party organized by the Editor of Punjabi Post, Jagdish Grewal who ran an unsuccessful campaign from Mississauga-Malton, a riding from where Navdeep Bains won. It is worth noting that just a few days earlier from elections his name was dropped from Liberal party portfolio on insensitive comments. Present on the BBQ was opposition leader Patrick Brown who when asked by media why he was there, defended his presence saying there is nothing wrong but he favours LGBT rights and will also attend Toronto’s pride parade.
7. In Britain search for the new Conservative leader is still on as Boris Johnson ruled himself out of race. It is surprising to note that his close ally Michael Gove has thrown his hat in. Media is asking if this can be seen as betrayal. Meanwhile, Michael Gove has said Great Britain should be led by the person who believes in keeping UK out of EU.
8. German Chancellor Angela Merkel in n interview has said the EU will face challenges in the absence of UK as it is faced with several such as immigrant and economic crisis but EU should stand united to resolve these issues.
9. In Syria media is speculating that USA and Russia have joined hands against terrorists but Kremlin has not commented on it. But if this is the case it is good news.
10. The Pak-Arab Oil Refinery (Parco) has started building Pakistan’s biggest oil refinery in Balochistan’s Hub area at the cost of $5 billion Khalifa Coastal Oil Refinery that is expected to create hundreds of jobs.
11. The nephew of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan has informed that Imran’s sister Dr Uzma Khan was harassed by police officials in Lahore.
12. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is once again embarking on a four-nation tour of Africa to strengthen ties with the African nations.
13. Indian Air Force today has inducted indigenously-built Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas in its fleet. The event was attended by several dignitaries.
14. Labour Minister Bandaru Dattatreya has announced today that all the private sector establishments will be providing six-month maternity leave to their female staff under a new bill. This was being demanded for a long time by women establishments. The bill is expected to be taken up by the Cabinet for approval while the ministry will try its best to get it passed as soon as possible.
15. As tussle between AAP and centre intensifies, Supreme Court has said it will hold a hearing on Monday.
16. Enforcement Directorate has issued new summons in connection with a land deal in Rajasthan allegedly used for money laundering when the Congress was in power at the Centre and in the state to a firm linked to Robert Vadra, Congress president Sonia Gandhi son-in-law. However, Sonia Gandhi has not commented on it.
17. Indian Supreme Court has dismissed a plea of Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh in a sexual assault case saying is the woman available.
18. Punjab Deputy CM Sukhbir Badal has said a dope test on 6.5 lakh youths attending a police recruitment drive on July 5 will bring the truth of drug use to forefront. But opposition is not buying it.
19. 24. In Euro Cup 2016 quarter-finals, today Wales is facing Belgium today. Tomorrow Germany will play against Italy. On Sunday France will take on Iceland. All matches can be seen at 3pm Toronto time. Yesterday Portugal won against Poland on penalty kicks 5-3 after a thrilling match.
