Vidarbha batsmen falter, Saurashtra on top on Day 1
Nagpur, February 3
Vidarbha were 200/7 at stumps against Saurashtra on the first day of the Ranji Trophy final at the Vidarbha Cricket Association stadium.
Tailenders Akshay Karnewar (31*) and Akshay Wakhare, who was yet to open his account, were unbeaten when stumps were drawn.
Opting to bat, hosts Vidarbha suffered jolts at regular intervals, thanks to some disciplined bowling by the Saurashtra bowlers.
Faiz Fazal (16) went back soon in a bizarre run-out. He gifted his wicket by slowing down a few steps away from the crease, thinking the throw from the deep is going towards the other end.
Just before the lunch, Jaydev Unadkat brought himself into the attack and struck big. He got one to move away from Wasim Jaffer, who, without moving his feet, fished and edged it to wicketkeeper. Unadkat jumped with joy and his fist-pumping celebration showed what the wicket meant to his side.
Stumper Akshay Wadkar was the top contributor for Vidarbha with 45 runs while Mohit Kale chipped in with 35 runs before falling. For Saurashtra, pacer Unadkat bagged a couple of wickets conceding just 26 runs while Chetan Sakariya, Prerak Mankad, Dharmendrasinh Jadeja and Kamlesh Makvana took one wicket each.
Saurashtra coach Sitanshu Kotak said, “Wasim bhai likes to go for his shots but today he sort of held back. The wicket was also slow and a bit damp today. We had a decent day after losing the toss. We would also have batted first upon winning the toss.”
“We were very disciplined, intensity was there and we have been reasonably rewarded. We kept getting wickets at intervals. We were lucky to get that Faiz wicket. It’s definitely not a wicket where you can bowl out opposition for 150, so we have done well,” he added.
Brief Scores: Vidarbha: 200/7 in 90 overs (A Wadkar 45, M Kale 35; J Unadkat 2/26) vs Saurashtra.
