With eye on Muslim votes, BJP plans triple talaq victims’ meet
Lucknow, November 12
In an attempt to woo Muslim women ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the state BJP is planning to hold a convention of triple talaq victims in Lucknow in December.
During the convention, triple talaq victims will relate their stories and the problems they have been facing due to this misused practice. The convention will showcase BJP’s effort to alleviate the suffering of Muslim women by its decision ban triple talaq in one sitting.
As a matter of fact, the BJP has already decided to appoint a ‘triple talaq pramukhs’ in every district of the state to prepare a list of triple talaq victims in the area to help the saffron party reach out to them.
BJP minority cell president Haider Abbas said the maximum number of triple talaq victims were in Bareilly and Moradabad. He said district-wise lists would be compiled ahead of the December convention.
Abbas said the BJP wanted to spread awareness about Shariat laws that actually denounces the practice of triple talaq in one sitting.
To make scriptures reader friendly for Muslim women not well-versed in either Arabic or Urdu, the BJP is preparing Hindi translation of scriptures so that women can read the scriptures themselves.
The larger BJP plan to mobilise Muslims for the saffron party includes a plan to recruit 2,000 Muslims members in each district and appoint at least two Muslims at every booth level committee.
BJP sources believe that it was the triple talaq issue that led to its awe-inspiring success in the 2017 Uttar Pradesh Vidhan Sabha elections. It wants to further consolidate its position among Muslim women ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
