Mississauga – Y Media organised a press conference for Punjabi movie, Subedar Joginder Singh at the high-end Mayura restaurant in Brampton. The event was attended by a large number of media outfits in the presence of movie’s lead star Gippy Grewal, Roshan Prince and members of the Saga Music. Those present on the occasion were Omni TV, Prime Asia, Apna Punjab, PTC Punjabi, Global TV, Zee TV, Hamdard newspaper, Pot Pourri, Ramz Punjabi, Punjabi Post, Sunshine radio, Gujarat Abroad, 5aab, Namaste Newsline and Singh Media.

Yudhvir Jaswal, Group Editor and CEO of Y Media, who had organised the event, commenting on the movie highlighted the character of Subedar Joginder Singh of Moga, recipient of the Param Vir Chakra. He commended the effort put in by Gippy saying he has put in his heart and soul in playing that role. He also urged the audience to watch the movie. Yudhvir said: “The Punjabi diaspora living abroad has already asked Punjabi filmmakers to produce meaningful movies away from violence and drug culture. And Gippy seems to have resonated with that sentiment. Over the years he has produced films such as Ardaas and now Subedar Joginder Singh that truly highlight the Punjabi culture in the true sense of the word.

“Punjabi are very hard working people but their achievements have not been underscored too much as their culture has been marred by movies and song on gang-life. But here is a movie that can serve as a beacon to other filmmakers. It’s a big budget film and we must support it by watching it in cinemas to defeat piracy and encourage other Punjabi filmmakers to produce films on good subjects.”

Talking on the occasion, singer, actor, producer Gippy Grewal who is playing the role of Subedar Joginder Singh in the movie, said: “It was hard to play the role of such an iconic personality. I studied the character closely and tried my best to play the role. So I urge all of you to come over and see the movie in cinemas.” Sharing his experience, Gippy said after looking at the script he knew it was going to be a brilliant film, but any compromise on production would tarnish its authenticity.

Gippy added: “We have been producing films in IRs3 cr to IRs 4 cr. But a huge amount of IRs20 crores was spent on this as the movie was shot in the difficult terrain of Kargil and in places where war was fought. To add authenticity to the script I met with Subedar’s family who laid his life not only for the Punjabis but for the country and was saddened to see they live in such a bad shape but getting firsthand knowledge from them helped me transform into that character.” He even put on weight for the role but had to shed it later on.

The versatile Gippy informed how he has promised himself to assist Subedar’s family. He said he was so much overwhelmed by the character that when he was called for Carry On Jatta 2, he could not get into that role and asked for that feeling of Subedar to settle down. On the question of releasing movies in Pakistan, Gippy said sometimes they face problems but he acknowledged getting at least 500 email on daily basis from his Pakistani fans. he also mentioned the appreciation of former Pakistani prime minister Nawaz Sharif who after watching his film, Carry On Jatta 1, sent him a message: ” Carry On Jatta” for doing such a commendable job. At the end he thanked everyone present on the occasion and urged everyone to watch the movie in theatres to encourage him to  keep producing such film.

Roshan Prince, playing the role of a very soft-hearted soldier, Swaran Singh in movie Subedar Joginder Singh informed he plays the role of a timid soldier but his true self is revealed when circumstances demand him to become a warrior. Talking about violence in youth he said, movies and song do affect youngsters but except perhaps for one song, none of his music glorifies drugs or violence. His innocent yet introvert personality could even be seen during the press conference where he sat quietly most of the time and questions were answered mostly by Gippy. The event MC was Jake Dheer and photography services were offered by Bashir Nasir.
