Canada Secures First Ever Copa America Quarter-Final Spot After 0-0 Draw with Chile

Maxime Crepeau made three saves to help Canada secure a goalless draw against Chile at Inter&Co Stadium on Saturday night, securing their spot in the Copa America quarterfinals in their debut appearance.

Chile played most of the match with ten men after Gabriel Suazo received a second yellow card in the 27th minute, leading to his dismissal. Despite the numerical advantage, Canada (1-1-1) couldn’t capitalize. Suazo had also been booked in the 12th minute, resulting in his red card.

Gabriel Arias made two saves for Chile (0-1-2), both in the first half, while Crepeau, who plays for Major League Soccer’s Portland Timbers, made one crucial save.

Canada progressed to the quarterfinals following Argentina’s 2-0 victory over Peru, securing top spot in Group A. Argentina, the tournament favorites aiming for their second consecutive title, won all their group stage matches. They defeated Brazil 1-0 in the 2021 final, the last edition of the tournament. Argentina and Uruguay have each won the Copa America title 15 times.
