June 24: India has strongly criticized the frequent instances of terrorism glorification in Canada, labeling them as “deplorable” and expressing concern that such activities are routinely permitted. The criticism came in a statement released by the Indian High Commission on the 39th anniversary of the 1985 Air India Kanishka bombing. The tragic incident resulted in the loss of 329 lives, predominantly Canadians of Indian heritage.
Memorial services were held by the Indian High Commission in Ottawa and the Indian consulates in Toronto and Vancouver to honor the victims of this terrorist act. The statement from the High Commission highlighted the ongoing threat of terrorism, which it described as an existential danger to global peace and security.
The Indian authorities also condemned any actions that glorify terrorism, including the 1985 bombing of Flight Al-182. The statement specifically mentioned India’s recent objection to a moment of silence held by the Canadian parliament in memory of Hardeep Singh Nijjar killed in British Columbia last year, highlighting the sensitivity of such actions.
