Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has confirmed a “brief exchange” with India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the ASEAN Summit in Laos, marking their first face-to-face encounter since tensions escalated last year. The strained relations stem from Trudeau’s allegations in the House of Commons in September 2023, accusing the Indian government of involvement in the assassination of Canadian Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia.
This meeting is Trudeau’s second in-person interaction with Modi since the diplomatic fallout, following his public statement about “credible allegations” linking India to Nijjar’s death. While Trudeau did not provide specific details of the conversation at the summit, he emphasized that there are pressing issues that need resolution.
“I made it clear that there is important work for us to address,” Trudeau stated during a press conference in Laos. “While I won’t delve into the specifics, I have consistently stressed that ensuring the safety of Canadians and upholding the rule of law remains a top priority for my government.”
Hardeep Singh Nijjar was fatally shot by masked gunmen outside a Sikh temple in British Columbia in June 2023. Four Indian nationals face charges of first-degree murder and conspiracy in connection to his killing, with the case still unfolding in Canadian courts. Just yesterday, Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly described the current state of Canada-India relations as “tense” and “very difficult,” cautioning that there remains an ongoing threat of further violence on Canadian soil.
