SGPC Chief Dhami Urges Government to Respect Public Support for Amritpal Singh and Release Him

July 6: Harjinder Singh Dhami, the president of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), has publicly called on the Punjab government to release Amritpal Singh, a prominent Sikh leader, and his detained supporters. Dhami’s appeal comes amidst widespread support for Singh within the Sikh community and ongoing protests against the government’s actions.

Amritpal Singh, the leader of Waris Punjab De, and several of his aides were arrested during a police crackdown aimed at curbing their activities. Singh and his followers were accused of promoting separatist ideologies and engaging in violent protests, including an incident at the Ajnala police station where supporters clashed with the police.

Dhami criticized the Punjab government for what he described as the unjust targeting and harassment of Sikh youths under the guise of maintaining law and order. He emphasized that such actions are not in the state’s best interest and called for the immediate release of those detained. Dhami argued that the government’s measures were creating an atmosphere of fear and mistrust, which could have long-term negative impacts on the community.

The SGPC, along with other Sikh organizations, has been vocal in its support for Singh, arguing that his arrest and the subsequent crackdown are politically motivated. They insist that the government should focus on providing opportunities and addressing the grievances of the Sikh community rather than resorting to punitive measures.

The situation remains tense, with continued calls for peaceful protests and demonstrations to demand the release of Amritpal Singh and his supporters. The SGPC’s stance highlights the broader concerns within the Sikh community regarding their treatment and representation in the state’s political landscape.
