June 21 : A tragic shooting in the Woodbridge area of Vaughan has resulted in one death and left three others hospitalized. The incident occurred around 9:30 a.m. at a home on Casa Nova Drive, near Davos Road, in the Major MacKenzie Drive and Weston Road vicinity.
York Regional Police reported that one individual sustained life-threatening injuries, while two others suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries. One victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
Constable Lisa Moskaluk addressed the media, stating, “Early indications are that this incident is targeted and isolated, and that there is no immediate threat to the public.” She added that the relationship between the victims and the residents of the home remains unclear.
The shooting has shaken the neighborhood, with residents expressing alarm after hearing gunfire. One witness reported hearing an initial burst of 10 gunshots, followed by a brief pause and then another five to six shots.
A resident named Lorenzo, who was taking his sister to school at the time, described seeing an individual he believed to be the suspect. “He came walking down the driveway, hopped into a car, made a u-turn on this street, and drove off up Davos,” Lorenzo recounted.
This home has reportedly been targeted before. Vehicles in the driveway were set on fire on Christmas Day in December. While police did not confirm a connection between the incidents, they indicated that any prior calls to the home would be considered in the ongoing investigation.
“There is no suspect description available yet, but police are actively searching for at least one suspect,” Moskaluk said. Images from the scene showed a heavy police presence, with officers canvassing neighbors and a stretch of the street cordoned off with yellow police tape.
As a precaution, two local schools were briefly placed under hold-and-secure orders, which have since been lifted.
Vaughan Mayor Steven Del Duca acknowledged the community’s distress, citing this incident and another fatal shooting at Vaughan Mills shopping center earlier in the week. “I have been in touch regularly with York Regional Police throughout the week and I have every confidence that they are doing everything possible to keep our residents safe,” Del Duca stated.
