Tensions mount in House of Commons as Conservatives launch second Non-Confidence Motion against Trudeau’s Government

September 2024: On Thursday, Members of Parliament debated the second non-confidence motion filed by the Conservatives against Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government, following rising tensions in the House of Commons.

Just a day earlier, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre’s first attempt to oust the Liberal minority government failed in a 211-120 vote. The opposition pushed another similar motion the next day.

The motion criticizes the government for doubling housing costs, increasing taxes on food, discouraging work, failing to address crime, and being overly centralizing. The Conservatives argued that it’s time to lower taxes, build more homes, fix the budget, and tackle crime.

Debate continued throughout the day, with the vote scheduled for next Tuesday. While the Bloc Quebecois has given the Liberals until late October to meet their demands, and the NDP says Canadians don’t want an election now, it’s expected that this vote will also end in the same result as the previous one.

Although neither the Bloc nor the NDP have confirmed how they will vote, the Conservatives urged them to stop supporting the Liberals and to help Canadians get the relief they need.

During the debate, Government House Leader Karina Gould commented on the Conservatives’ repeated efforts, noting the defeat of Poilievre’s first motion. She pointed out that the Liberals, Bloc, and NDP are focused on working for Canadians, while the Conservatives seem less enthusiastic after their previous loss.
