UN Warns of ‘Risk of Full-Scale’ War on Israel-Lebanon Border Where Indian Peacekeepers Are Posted

July 6: The United Nations has issued a grave warning about the escalating tensions on the Israel-Lebanon border, highlighting the imminent risk of a full-scale war. This conflict zone is of particular concern as it involves Indian peacekeepers stationed in the region, tasked with maintaining a fragile peace.

The tension between Israel and Hezbollah, the Iran-backed militant group in Lebanon, has been intensifying. The situation deteriorated following an attack by Hamas on Israel, which subsequently saw Hezbollah engaging in near-daily cross-border strikes with the Israeli military. These hostilities have resulted in significant casualties and displacement on both sides, with over 450 people, mainly fighters and civilians, killed in Lebanon, and several Israeli soldiers and civilians also losing their lives.

The UN has emphasized that a war in this region could have catastrophic consequences, extending far beyond the immediate area. The Secretary-General of the UN, Antonio Guterres, warned that such a conflict could spiral out of control, affecting not only the Middle East but also drawing in global powers due to the region’s geopolitical significance.

Lebanon, already grappling with a severe economic crisis, is ill-equipped to handle the additional strain of a full-scale war. The country has been facing deteriorating public services, a crumbling healthcare system, and widespread poverty exacerbated by the Syrian refugee crisis. The Lebanese government has prepared an emergency plan anticipating the displacement of up to one million people if the conflict escalates.

On the Israeli side, there has been significant preparation for potential escalations, including the evacuation of tens of thousands of residents from border areas. The economic impact of the ongoing conflict in Gaza has already been substantial, and a new front with Lebanon would only increase the burden.

The situation remains volatile, with both sides demonstrating military readiness and engaging in psychological warfare. Hezbollah’s leader, Hassan Nasrallah, has issued dire warnings against any Israeli aggression, while Israel continues to bolster its defenses and prepare for possible large-scale military operations.

The presence of Indian peacekeepers under the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) underscores the international community’s commitment to maintaining peace and stability in this volatile region. However, their mission is becoming increasingly challenging as the likelihood of a wider conflict looms.

The UN continues to call for immediate de-escalation and urges both sides to pursue diplomatic solutions to avoid a devastating war that would have severe humanitarian impacts on the region’s already vulnerable populations.
