Ontario police services are supporting the provincial Crime Prevention Week (#CPWeek2022) taking place November 6 to 12, 2022, with in-person and on-line community events designed to raise awareness of the many crime prevention initiatives being undertaken by police organizations in collaboration with community partners.
The annual Provincial Crime Prevention Week’s theme is “Safer. Stronger. Together.” and is led by the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police (OACP) and the Ontario Ministry of the Solicitor General. It provides police services with opportunities to showcase the successful collaborative efforts between police services and community partners as they work together towards the common goal of preventing crime and building safe communities across Ontario.
OACP President Chief Nishan Duraiappah today hosted an event at Peel Regional Police Headquarters in Mississauga, ON marking Crime Prevention Week. He was joined by the Honourable Michael Kerzner, Solicitor General for Ontario, and community partners from across Peel Region.
“I am proud that police services in Ontario are actively participating in Crime Prevention Week. In my capacity as OACP President, I get to see the hard work and dedication of so many outstanding police officers, civilian personnel, Special Constables, and Auxiliary Officers in this area of our work,” said Chief Duraiappah. “A common element in so much of our law enforcement efforts is the prevention of crime before it occurs.”
Throughout Crime Prevention Week, police services will be reminding the public that everyone who lives, works or goes to school in Ontario deserves to feel safe. Community safety and well-being is a shared responsibility. Preventing crime before it happens is a goal all of us share. Ontarians are encouraged to work with their local police service(s) and other government, educational, health care, and social service providers/community groups to address crime issues in their communities.
The OACP and all police services are committed to providing the public with information and resources that can help empower individuals and communities when it comes to crime prevention. For example, the OACP makes the following informative resources available on-line to Ontarians:
- Out of the Shadows: Understand the threats posed by organized crime organizations by such crimes as human trafficking, street gangs, outlaw motorcycle gangs, traditional organized crime entities, money laundering, fraud, cybercrimes, etc.
- Hate/Bias Crimes: A Review of Policies, Practices, and Challenges: A critical resource for law enforcement personnel and community members in fighting hate and bias crimes.
