In a major development, Giani Harpreet Singh, the Jathedar of Takht Sri Damdama Sahib, has resigned from his post under the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC). He cited threats from Virsa Singh Valtoha, a former leader of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), as the reason behind his decision. Valtoha was recently expelled from the party by Sri Akal Takht Sahib.
This resignation follows closely on the heels of key events at Sri Akal Takht Sahib, raising tensions in both Sikh religious and political circles. The timing of Giani Harpreet Singh’s resignation has caught many by surprise, as it comes just a day after he ordered Virsa Singh Valtoha’s expulsion from the party for ten years. In his resignation announcement, Giani Harpreet Singh stated that he has been facing threats from Valtoha, who made “baseless” accusations against him. He revealed that since Sri Akal Takht Sahib’s decision to expel Valtoha, he has received multiple threats.
In an emotional video, Giani Harpreet Singh expressed his disappointment, claiming that although he informed the SGPC about the threats, no one addressed his concerns.
As of now, the SGPC, based in Amritsar, has not issued an official statement regarding his resignation. Giani Harpreet Singh’s decision to step down is unusual and marks a significant moment in Sikh religious leadership.
The resignation has sparked discussions among the Sikh community about the intertwining of politics and religion within the SGPC and the broader Sikh leadership.
