Winter storms continue to batter eastern Canada, triggering power outages and travel disruptions

Severe winter weather continued to grip parts of Eastern Canada on Tuesday, as a powerful storm system brought freezing rain, blowing snow, and strong winds to multiple provinces, knocking out power and making travel treacherous.

Ontario and Quebec were among the hardest hit, with tens of thousands of customers left without electricity at the height of the storm. Environment Canada has issued yellow and orange weather warnings for millions of people, covering a wide swath from eastern Ontario through Quebec and into the Atlantic region.

Meteorologists warn that conditions could worsen as snow squalls, gusty winds, and plunging temperatures follow a round of freezing rain, further complicating road and air travel.

In several areas of Ontario and Quebec, storm fronts delivered a dangerous mix of ice, snow, and high winds. Northeast of Quebec City and extending into northern New Brunswick, Environment Canada says snowfall totals could range from 15 to as much as 40 centimetres, accompanied by strong winds capable of reducing visibility and creating blizzard-like conditions.

The latest system is part of a relentless series of weather events that have swept across much of the country over the past week. Canadians from coast to coast have faced blizzards, extreme cold, freezing rain, and heavy rainfall, with flights cancelled and transportation networks disrupted in several regions.

Officials continue to urge residents to monitor forecasts closely and avoid unnecessary travel as the volatile winter pattern shows little sign of letting up.
