The Swedish royal family is touching down in Ottawa today for a rare three-day state visit, accompanied by senior government ministers and representatives from more than a dozen major Swedish companies.
King Carl XVI Gustaf — Sweden’s longest-serving monarch — and Queen Silvia are making their first official trip to Canada since 2006, with stops planned in both Ottawa and Montreal.
Their visit begins with an official welcome ceremony at Rideau Hall, where Chief Justice Richard Wagner will lead the Canadian delegation. The King and Queen will then lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier before heading to Parliament Hill for meetings with Prime Minister Mark Carney and other federal officials.
Later in the afternoon, Canada and Sweden will jointly reaffirm their commitment to supporting Ukraine. Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand is expected to meet with Sweden’s Deputy Prime Minister Ebba Busch and leaders from the Ukrainian-Canadian community for discussions focused on defence and continued international cooperation.
The day will conclude with a state dinner hosted at the Governor General’s residence in honour of the royal couple, marking the ceremonial start of their multi-day visit.
