Alpine Canada has appointed Andrew Baker as its new President and Chief Executive Officer following an extensive search led by the organization’s Board of Directors. Baker joins Alpine Canada after holding several senior leadership positions with the Canadian Olympic Committee, where he contributed to major initiatives aimed at strengthening Canada’s high-performance sport system.
During his time with the Canadian Olympic Committee, Baker was involved in sport funding advocacy and efforts surrounding the Indigenous-led bid for the Vancouver 2030 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. At Alpine Canada, his mandate will include improving the organization’s financial sustainability, increasing participation and fan engagement, and strengthening Canada’s development system across alpine, ski cross and Para alpine racing.
Baker takes over as Canadian sport enters a new Olympic and Paralympic cycle and following the federal government’s recently announced $1-billion investment in sport. Alpine Canada Board Chair Tim Dattels said the organization wants to bring governments, businesses and philanthropists together to create a more sustainable system for Canadian athletes, with a longer-term goal of eliminating team fees for athletes representing Canada.
Baker said he hopes to build on Canada’s history of success in international ski racing by strengthening partnerships, supporting grassroots clubs and improving development opportunities for national-team athletes. Canadian Olympic Committee CEO David Shoemaker also welcomed the appointment, describing Baker as a leader capable of building relationships and bringing stakeholders together around ambitious goals for Canadian sport.
